A 4- Day Training Workshop on:
Laboratory Methods and Analysis of soil, Fertilizer and crops
Julius Okojie Central Research Laboratory, Centre of Excellence for Food Security was supported by STEP-B. One of its core mandates is training on laboratory instrumentation, operations,, application and maintenance of analytical instruments. FUTA Central Research Laboratory is equipped with the state-of-art equipment that fit the mandate of training.
To impart adequate skills that will enable the participants to effectively use and maintain laboratory equipment/instrument in order to be able to analyse soil, fertilizers and crop materials with a view to enhancing food production, teaching and research. At the end of the workshop, participant will be able to:
i. conduct independent analysis and produce accurate results using the equipment they have trained on;
ii. standardize laboratory analytical equipment and procedures;
iii. upgrade existing analytical procedures; and
iv. carry out preventive maintenance and trouble shooting
Target Audience: Technologists/Scientists in Tertiary Institutions, Federal and State Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Establishments, Research Institutes, Industries and Private establishments.
Approach to Training:
The workshop will be facilitated by experts with over two decades of experience in the subject matter. This will involve lectures, discussions and syndicate works.
v Introduction to Modern Techniques in soil and plant analysis.
v Soil Sampling (field work/practical session) on plant, soil and fertilizer
v Sample pre-treatment for quality analysis, drying, digestion, extraction etc
v Particle size analysis, particle density, bulk density, etc.
v Preparation of standard solutions, unit of analytical results and conversion of concentration units.
v Cation exchange capacity, Organic matter analysis, Nitrogen determination in soil, plant and fertilizer.
v Application of flame photometer and AAS in Mineral analysis.
v Determination of available P and total P in Soil, and fertilizer using UV/Visible spectrophotometer
v Review and interpretation of results.
Fees: #45,000.00 per participant. This covers training materials, bag, tea break and lunch.
